"For a family like us who likes to go whitewater kayaking and has a small child it's the perfect car.
We were able to fit two people and two kayaks plus equipment inside and still got good handling and decent gas mileage (27-29 mpg) at speeds 70-85 mph.
As someone who drove a manual for 20+ years in Europe, the stick shift is very smooth and acceleration is great. Don't listen to people who say that the car is sluggish - they are either used to a Porsche, drive an automatic or just don't know how to get good performance out of smaller engines. The only issues are winter-related, living in ND with 5 months of winter with unsalted streets which are often unplowed, the car is a bit too low over the ground and the front wheels spin easily but the handling improved a lot when I got performance winter tires, the regular Maza-tires are cheap and not that good. My 2006 Mazda had some small issues like some plastic parts getting loose or some strange noise from the bushings ,battery replacement in the third winter, but nothing serious.

"Exceptional value for money. I traded my compact size car for this min van. I did not want to buy a gas guzzling mini van and compromise on my fuel economy simply because I have to drive a small percentage of the time with six passengers. This super mini van was my best choice and I’m very glad I bought this,. Can’t expect any other mini van to drive like a zoom-zoom car for daily commute."

"I had the opportunity to trade in a full size conversion van and spent a couple months before that looking for something that could seat six. Already having one mini-van in the garage detered me from duplicating that even to the point of looking for the traditional station wagon. I never even knew a 5 existed until I went to the dealer and he showed me one. Found one with all the toys (Navi, roof, auto temp, Etc).
Both my wife and I love the car to the point we jockey to see who gets to drive it.
For a family of 6 (Kids under 11) this is a great choice for commuting and playing "taxi" to all their events. The back seats are not made for giants but fit the kids very well and they can access easily, even with the car seats.
With all of us in the car, you can still fit 5 bags of groceries in the back (you do need to make sure there is nothing else back there).
We have no problem going out to dinner with another couple (4 adults) as the middle seats adjust and it provides plenty of room.
Only down side is the 2007 auto is a 4 speed (2008 is a 5 speed) so it would be nice to have the extra gear on the highway.
Parking the thing is a breeze, especially in chaotic parking lots and unless we have to get big items or are going shopping for a months worth of grocerie, we take it everywhere.
I would buy another one in a heart beat

"I bought my 06 new when I needed more room for carseats. (6 gr children) I have 5 sp manual and love it. My gas mileage is 25 commuting to/from work (rural, hilly) and around 29-30 on highway. My only complaint is the front seats don't slide back farther, leaving little leg room in front passenger seat. Also, I agree that when all 6 seats are up (which is rare) there is NO storage. But, overall I really like this car. I refuse to call it a mini-van, I prefer "sport wagon" :)"

"We just bought this car/micro minivan over the weekend. It wasn't even on our radar until we saw it at the dealership and knew it was the one. It is the perfect fit for our family. We wanted something that was under 20k, good gas mileage, plenty of seating AND lots of cargo space. The Mazda5 fit the bill. It is sporty and fun to drive, it doesn't feel big or bulky at all, and yet you get the benifits of having a larger vehicle.
I love this car!

"This is great for small families that don't want the stigma of a mini van, but still want the room. I down sized from a SUV, to get better gas mileage, but did not give up any room. I also gained the extra row of seating."

"I have driven this vehicle (GT) for 3 months. The city mileage is 23 and the best highway I got was 31 MPG (US). Reasonable pick up (not great). Smooth ride. Comfortable seating. Good interiors.

The worst part is road noise. It is just unbearable. I recommend people to test drive it on dry roads before making a decision on buying this.

"I had my car for 5 months now. I pretty much love all most everything about it. My husband and I shopped around for something that was reasonable and could fit a family of six. We're always on the go with all the kids being in sports. I also needed something good on gas due to the fact I work over 35 miles from home. The only thing we don't like is the cargo space. You're not given that much room when the 3rd row is up not even for groceries. I do love the fact it drives and looks like a sports car. It doesn't give you that minivan feel."

"We looked at everything in it's class but nothing came close.
Comfortable ride yet it handles like a sports sedan. If you like to drive a car, this car likes to be driven. Exceptional feedback, great brakes, and power steering/brakes give great feedback. Grandma may not be as delighted with that.
Rides well empty or full. We travel across West Texas where the posted speed limit is 80, and traffic flows at 85-90. The Mazda 5 still delivers 28MPG at those speeds with 4 adults and a few suitcases.
Front seats feel a bit firm at first but after 30,000 miles they feel really good - and still firm.
Back seats have more room then most SUV's. Third row seating is tight.
It took us a few months to get a fully loaded manual shift. Shifts really well, and gears are matched exactly to the motor. Let out the clutch in first at an idle - even climbing a slight grade - no problem. Originally we felt it could use a 6th gear as it revs a bit higher in top gear, but we've since realized thats the nature of the delightful yet powerful 2.3 motor.
Around town in stop & go we get 23-24 MPG. Thats the stop & go where it takes 45 minutes to go 17 miles on the freeway.
The down sides;
1) Wind noise - not bad, but it's there.
2) Needs more armrests - Maybe Mazda overlooked the fact that most people have 2 arms.
3) Narrow headlight focal plane - say like when you're turning into an alley, it would help to have a little more peripheral light.
4) Open gas latch blocks rear door opening.
5) No advertising - maybe thats a good thing, because the car simply sells itself - drive one and nothing else in it's class comes close.
We were prepared to spend up to 50% more on something that fit our needs. Thats value.
